Medical Formulas for Ideal Weight

Four Established Medical Formulas

These formulas were developed by medical professionals and researchers to determine ideal body weight for clinical purposes. Each uses height and gender to calculate optimal weight ranges.

Devine Formula (1974)

Male: 50 + 2.3 × (height - 60)
Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height - 60)

Most commonly used in medical settings. Developed by Dr. Ben Devine for drug dosage calculations.

Robinson Formula (1983)

Male: 52 + 1.9 × (height - 60)
Female: 49 + 1.7 × (height - 60)

Modification of Devine formula. Provides slightly different baseline weights with adjusted multipliers.

Miller Formula (1983)

Male: 56.2 + 1.41 × (height - 60)
Female: 53.1 + 1.36 × (height - 60)

Uses higher baseline weights with lower height multipliers. Often gives more conservative estimates.

Hamwi Formula (1964)

Male: 48.0 + 2.7 × (height - 60)
Female: 45.5 + 2.2 × (height - 60)

Developed by Dr. G.J. Hamwi. Uses the highest height multiplier, often giving higher weight estimates.

Important Considerations

Formula Limitations
  • • Designed for heights ≥ 5 feet (152 cm)
  • • Don't account for body composition
  • • May not suit all ethnicities equally
  • • Don't consider age or activity level
Best Practices
  • • Use as a general guideline, not absolute target
  • • Consider all four results for a range
  • • Combine with BMI and body fat percentage
  • • Consult healthcare providers for personalized advice
What is Ideal Weight?

Ideal weight refers to the optimal weight range for your height and gender that minimizes health risks and promotes overall well-being. Unlike BMI, which provides broad categories, ideal weight formulas give you specific target weights based on established medical research.

These calculations were originally developed for clinical use, particularly for determining medication dosages and assessing nutritional status. Today, they serve as valuable tools for setting realistic weight goals and understanding healthy weight ranges.

Benefits of Knowing Your Ideal Weight

  • • Provides specific weight targets for goal-setting
  • • Helps assess current weight status
  • • Guides healthy weight loss or gain plans
  • • Useful for medical and nutritional assessments
  • • More precise than BMI ranges
  • • Based on established medical research

Factors Not Considered

  • • Body composition (muscle vs. fat ratio)
  • • Bone density and frame size
  • • Age and metabolic factors
  • • Athletic build and muscle mass
  • • Ethnic and genetic variations
  • • Individual health conditions
Devine Formula

Most widely used in medical practice for drug dosing calculations

Robinson Formula

Modified version providing alternative baseline calculations

Miller Formula

Conservative approach with higher baseline weights

Using Your Results

Your ideal weight calculation provides a target range, not a single "perfect" number. Use these results as a guide alongside other health indicators like BMI, body fat percentage, and overall fitness level. Remember that the healthiest weight for you may fall within or slightly outside this calculated range based on your individual circumstances.
